Session Report

Well the party was back at Queens Rest mountain for the third time. This ended up being the final time at least for 2 weeks. At this point some of the players likely felt like they HAD to Return Again to Queen's Rest Mountain. MadEye was captured last week and they wanted to gather his remains for proper cremation (or resurrection which is what actually happened). The two paladins, Marion and Olivier, had been visited by their Deities last week for abandoning the body the 6th level Lawful Cleric Xanthos when they fled from the battle with the lizardmen. Likely the smartest play to save one's skin but not exactly the behavior or Lawful Paladins of the Empyrean Pantheon!

So those two paladins, to get their paladin powers back, had to be part of a team to recover Xanthos's body.

In downtime, last week, Billy went and got Gaius (PC Patron Legate) and led him out to Forward Operating Base (FOB) Queen with 2 companies of New Cyfaraun regulars. If you haven't picked up by now, FOB Queen is a tower that the Patron Barbarian Kyle O'Conner built in real play to give a safe place for PCs to rest between sessions when they were doing weekly delves at his nearby dungeon "Queen's Rest Mountain".

Some of the BROSR critics have whined about how 1:1 Jeffrogaxian Timekeepking doesn't allow PCs etc to adventure deep into the wilderness away from civilization. Not true! It merely presents a challenge for PCs or Patrons to tackle to get the game world and play style they want. Real players find real solutions to the various restrictions the rules put upon them.

Kyle approved of Gaius's visit and traveling companies, it seems. I believe he may have made a bellittling comment to Gaius in downtime chat since FOB Queen has like 8 companies of soldiers are something absurd so Kyle wasn't scared of the Lawful Auran Gaius marching around his lands with 2 (two).

On 10/05/22 Gaius added his companies to Jeremiah Johnson's (hench explorer to Kyle) ranging companies to march to Queens Rest Mountain with the party. They climbed the mountain and the PCs, sans troops, went inside. Gaius took them straight to the Lizardmen's entrance to the temple which had its doors closed. Billy knocked and Viktor (iirc) could speak lizardman through the door to communicate with the lizardmen beyond. The party (Gaius primarily) offered the lizardmen cash for the remains of Xanthos, MadEye and whoever else was in there after getting eaten by giant chameleons. The lizardmen demanded about 2,400 gp. Gaius wanted to add in a free magic sword if the lizardmen would help the party acquire Queen Alicia, the "sleeping beauty" Kyle has informed the party was inside the temple and who he wanted them to save (offering the PCs a big payout for this!)

Suddenly a deep angry lizard voice boomed through the door in Auran common language upon this request: "Queen Alicia is ours and nothing will stop us from our mission to find her!" Seems the lizardmen don't like the Queen much so PCs must have realized they'd be in a race vs the lizardmen to wake her up first if they wanted Kyle's big cash payout.

Gaius shrugged and agreed to pay the lizardmen what they want and the bodies of Xanthos and MadEye were secured. Gaius's cleric henchmen did a Commune to assure the bones and gore the lizards gave them included MadEye and Xanthos. The god Turas then appeared and slapped Olivier and Marion on the back with an "attaboys" for saving Xanthos's bodies and their Paladin powers were returned. Gaius asked Turas why he wasn't in the Cosmic Battle for the #FateOfStormbringer and Turas stated he was too busy getting a mad pump since all the gyms were closed the last few years.

Gaius and his henchmen left, to the chagrin of the lower level adventurers. I was grabbing a drink but I think there was some heated discussion on the mics with Gaius's player that he should remain with the party. He was also running Olivier which I wasn't super happy with since I generally deny Players the ability to run two PCs at once for a few reasons:

-it's kind of unfair to the other players. Why should one player get to level two PCs at once and not another?

-it's hard to keep track of. Unfortunately ACKS isn't as easy to run big DND skirmish combats as 1e (shut up Jeffro) so it's not easy to trust a player to keep track of two leveled PCs.

I gave the player's permission to run two PCs in this case since we're getting into new territory now of a PC who properly ascended to Patron status in real play. The first of the #BROSR , I believe. Dubzaron is always setting records.

However, Gaius's player admitted he was doing IRL stuff while he was playing and would mostly be depending on the Caller to keep his Paladin Olivier rolling forward and making calls for his actions and such. He also felt Gaius didn't care about Kyle's reward or waking up the supposed sleeping beauty in the dungeon. So Gaius left and took his leveled Cleric henchmen with him.

In hindsight Gaius may have been saved from a major issue in the form of level drain so it was probably bad for the Party but good for Gaius that he didn't continue on.

The party then explored the cavern entrance near the rift on the stone which dropped down to bubbling lava. They contemplated letting Gront climb across to go up the ramp stairway there into a far eastern entrance to the temple but finally settled on going to the middle entrance stairs (about 100' east of the lizardman guarded entrance). At the base of the stairs Gront noticed 5 black widow spiders slowly eating a lizardman captive and the party decided to leave it be despite possible treasure hanging up in the web.

Laru went ahead first and looked around the room at the middle entrance. He found a large bell shaped room with 2 doors on the east and west walls and a double doors on the oppose wall far off that had been broken down. He saw large 15 foot tall statues in this entry room that had expensive ruby eyes. And crates of workers tools like chisels and stuff. He went back to get the party and they decided to pass through the room to the double doors on the other side.

amber golem
The next room to the north had two more smaller statues but these depicted the goddess of pain and lust Nasga. One was stone and one was amber. The statues were slowly animating so the party used the free round to close with and beat down the amber statue pretty easily by the middle of the second round. The stone statue went after Gront and 5X but failed to hit for a while. After about 2 rounds of the stone statue missing its attacks it finally got a double cleave off which killed Viktor, Edelweiss's assassin, and 5X, Laru's long running thief henchmen and bff. The lady statue backhanded 5X's head backwards killing him instantly, then picked up the body and used it to bludgeon Viktor to death. Finally 5X's corpse was thrown at Olivier hurting him quite a bit but not downing him. The Paladin fought on.

The party, by this time, was realizing none of their regular and even their +1 weapons was hitting the stone statue for any damage. It kept laughing at them.

Olivier wrestled the statue for one round but was unable to knock it down or hold on to it for long. Edeleweiss debated trying to wrap chains around the statue to tie it down or trip it or something but after losing 2 folks the party decided instead to flee. The statue had been breathing a thick smoke the whole time which was making everyone who didn't save vs breath feel groggy and move at half movement so, for many of the PCs, running away was going to be a challenge. Marion in particular was moving extremely slow.

Edelweiss set off some oil she placed on the ground earlier as she fled and the statue chose not to pursue through the fire. The party triaged the dead but neither survived.

Meanwhile Laru was climbing one of the 15 foot statues with ruby eyes to chisel out the eyes. There was a chain on the back of the 1,000 gp value ruby which opened something inside the statue like a little box and a ghostlike creature phased out of statue with intent to attack Laru. Wraith!

Laru was hanging on the 15' tall statue and took out his silver dagger to try and fight back but missed. When the spirit touched him his lost 2 levels to Energy Drain and he decided to cut his climbing rope and fall to the ground to escape. Edelweiss shot the Wand of Lightning Bolt which Kyle was letting her borrow and killed the creature instantly.

The party then decided to take the rubies from the other statue but with Laru ready to drop to the floor and run off with the rubies before the assumed spirit in that one could get him, and Edelweiss ready to lightning bolt it. That plan worked and the ghost thing on the other statue came out and was lightning bolted to death before it got off a round of combat.

Some ghouls broke through a western door at this time, apparently wandering in to the sound of lightning bolts but the party decided to depart the dungeon and successfully fled those. They got back to FOB Queen with Jeremiah Johnson and Gaius's troops without incident.

Afterword

It's very cool how simple dungeon delves were impacted and also impacted the macro Patron worldbuilding stuff. I didn't have to force it. But when, last week, the Party ended up with some important PCs getting captured and such, they went to Patrons for help. Gaius in particular, since he's good friends with a few of the captives and survivors of the last session.

This, in turn, developed into what I think was a bit of an uncomfortable situation between Kyle and Gaius on the Patron scale. They had to come to an understanding about the troops Gaius wanted to march with and what he was trying to accomplish.

The following week, after all this Queens Rest stuff was wrapped up, Gaius arrested some diplomats of Kyle's who were visiting his (Gaius's) Legature for general court business. Was there some element of the Queen's Rest sessions which caused bad blood leading to this? I have no clue since DMs aren't privy to much of the behind the scenes Patron shenanigans. But I think it's possible.

As far as I know Gaius and Kyle are now pals and everything is fine. A misunderstanding? Perhaps.

The PCs did pretty well except for Laru who unfortunately, after having been out of Session Play for like 5 months, came back just to be level drained. That sucked bad.

Additionally the GP take for the session was hindered badly by the fact Kyle O'Conner put a price of 2k per charge used of the Wand of Lightning Bolts he gave the party for their delve. lol, gotta love patrons.

As far as MadEye and Xanthos go, they were ressurected somehow a few days later. The Lawful Gods are surely happy about that but I do wonder about the difficulty or whatever of a campaign where rez is easy to come by. Perhaps it's not easy to come by? I haven't looked too deeply into it since downtime play is generally handled by the Players themselves via solo play with Rules As Written for market forces and the like, going on the honor system.

The Lawful gods were happy to have Xanthos back the next week when he helped strike a blow against the fish goddess and help Law fight back against the Curse of Lamalla. Stay tuned!

Dubzaron Session 74: Return to Queen's Rest Mountain

This session was played on 09/28/22 using 1 day of adventure and needing 1 day or rest; PCs can act again on 09/30/22.

Participating PCs

Billy (Explorer L5), Gront Coldsky (Barbarian L3), Marion (Paladin L1), Norman (Gnome Trickster L1), Olivier (Paladin L6), Timothy MadEye (Venturer L7), Xanthos (Cleric L6)

Hench: Xanthos: Lysander Fighter L1, MadEye: Saturnis Fighter L4

Session Report

The party returned to Queens Rest mountain and went inside the volcano. Upon arriving they decided to go back at the entrance being guarded by lizardmen. Billy drank a potion of invisibility and snuck up to confirm the same number of lizardmen had now been called to the room the party had hit hard last week. About 16 lizardmen, 2 champs, and a thracian. Billy laid oil down in the room whilst invisible and did not get caught (phew!). He snuck out and the party got a surprise round on the lizards with the help of the gnomish trickster doing a mission impossible style security camera image imprint over their approach. It's like MI: Ghost Protocol, maybe you remember it? I was kind of uncertain about this tactic since it seemed like a replacement of a spell that already existed: Mass Invisibility. So I made the following ruling for this illusion tactic.

Ghost Protocol Illusion: -1 to being surprised roll for bad guys. Success = Disbelieve illusion check because hearing sounds like footsteps that shouldn't be there.

But it did work and the PCs got Surprise.

The surprise round ended with a couple of regular lizards and their thracian big boss killed! But the lizardmen mad their morale check to fight on the first full round of combat. The gnome popped off the Horn of Blasting which destroyed the lizardmen's wooden barrier at the top of the stairs the lizards were holding. It didn't do enough damage to kill any of them but many were deaf.

This went pretty well with Olivier, Xanthos, Gront and Marion holding the front line for a while, killing some lizardmen here and there. But then 2 giant chameleons (who were hiding along the wall) appeared and used tongue attacks to pull xanthos and olivier towards them into the room and biting them. Those two lads got hemmed up in a battle with their chameleons and MadEye his fighter henchman filled in that part of the front line.

About the time MadEye, Saturnis, Gront and Marion were cleaning up the mob of regular lizardmen, 2 more champions and 2 more chameleons came from the other room. A bit behind them, unnoticed was a powerful thracian cleric of some sort. When he cast Hold Person the following round he nabbed MadEye Gront, and Saturnis and things started falling apart for the good guys.

Xanthos was killed the following round as the thracian cleric stepped in with a flaming magic sword and cut him down. This was a huge loss and the players started to get pretty nervous.

Billy, still firing into the battle from missile position, fled into the volcano area and was not pursued. Olivier and Marion also disengaged and fled. Norman the gnome had another ghost protocol illusion thing on by this time and tried to sneak up as the battle was winding down (semi-invis) and use prestidigitation and pickpocket to slip the first thracian's clearly magical spear away. He failed his pickpocket so I ruled there could be a disbelieve illusion check on his weird version of not-quite-invisibility and the thracian cleric rolled a nat 20. The gnome was tackled and imprisoned (tied up) along with MadEye and Gront.

After the battle Xanthos made a pretty bad mortal wounds check and was bleeding out. The thracian cleric could have probably saved Xanthos but the reaction check deemed he instead watched with bemused laughter as the lawful cleric of Naurivius bled out on the floor. Reaction checks down the line of captured PCs indicated the gnome was killed immediately for being annoying, MadEye was gagged to shut him up, and Gront was kept tied up and possibly to be ransomed if the big boss can imagine a safe way to do so.

Billy came back up to yell out terms and that they had plenty of money to pay ransom but reaction check went against Billy and deemed the lizardmen were offended by him and they chased him off. Billy easily won a dungeon chase since he had twice the movement of the lizardmen and didn't flub his paralyze check to make a hard right turn up the stairs out of the volcano, as per ACKS dungeon chase rules. The thracian cleric, despite having wings, was not offended enough by Billy to personally fly after him, sending his slower cronys.

At the top of the volcano Jeremiah Johnson, who guided them out to the mountain dungeon, was like "wtf really? again?!" and he escorted the surviving 3 PCs back to FOB Queen.

Afterword

I was a bit surprised the PCs chose to go back at the lizardmen. I believe this may have been due to Sunken Cost Fallacy. They lost some men and resources last session against the lizards and maybe thought "well we have to ALMOST have them, right?"

Kyle's Patron quest was to find the Queen who was magically asleep somewhere in the temple. He was offereing a big pay out to find and wake her but also offering like 150 gp (and thus XP) per room the PCs found and mapped. If I were me I'd have focused on those elements but I'm sure the supposed lair treasure horde the "surely weakened" lizardmen must be sitting on was attracting the greed of the PCs.

What I've found very interesting about running 1:1 Jefforgaxian Time D&D is how things like taking PCs prisoner is very feasible and effective. That is time the PC has to sit out of the downtime game and maybe future sessions, even if he's safely ransomed back.

This whole situation led to some really great worldbuilding and downtime stuff. Firstly, the two Paladins were visited by their deities who called them cowardly punks for running from the battle without trying to at the least claim Xanthos's body. Both Paladins lost their paladin powers and couldn't level/gain XP until they helped recoved Xanthos's corpse for proper cremation or possibly resurrections. The Lawful gods like Xanthos, He's mid to high level.

Gront was in fact successfully blackmailed from the lizards to the Patron Player Kyle OConner. Being a barbarian of the same background as Kyle I ruled the Lizardmen didn't want to make a direct enemy of Kyle by killing one of his tribesman.

The lizardmen fed MadEye to their giant Chameleons.

Billy ran off to New Cyfaraun during downtime to beg for Gaius's help; a PC who ascended into Patron status. Next session you'll see how these worlds collided as Gaius arrived with his big army to try and help deal with the lizardman menace that has twice now stymied this newer and lower level PC party.

Stay tuned!

The Curse of Lamalla: Cross Campaign D&D Event

There's alot going on in the BROSR. And much of it is revolving around the evil demi-god turned sword: Stormbringer.

I started to write the whole brosr history of the sword from Michael' Moorcock's much loved grimdark fantasy series but I changed my mind. The main thing to know this last month or so is my good e-friend Mr Wargaming has been running a cosmic wargame on his yout00bbz channel to decide the #FateOfStormbringer

You can check that out here, focusing on the first couple videos in the series where he breaks down most of the history of brosr version of Stormbringer, including his take on Operation Muscle Thunder (a massive Dubzaron campaign event.)

Spoilers ahead for the Fate Of Stormbringer. If you want to watch Mr Wargaming's videos and be surprised and delighted, stop reading now.

Have you stopped?

I'm still waiting.

Ok good.

Today on 10/11/22 the Fate of Stormbringer was decided with Mr Wargaming's megapiles of d6s and tiny pewter figures. Instead of the god of death Bel grabbing Stormbringer and plunging it into the heart of the Dubzaron sun, it was secured by the evil crabby sea goddess Blipbloop, otherwise known as Lamalla in the Dubzaron campaign setting.

If you know anything about Operation Muscle Thunder you know that Stormbringer's soul sucking power became kind of unstable after wrecking the weirding witch named Celeste; a major henchwoman of the barbarian Patron named Kyle O'Conner. Seems she's been around for 10 generations in Kyle's family but has never aged. No one knows why but she most certainly has a weirding power.

When Lamalla decided to just keep Stormbringer, Gollum style, something cracked. Her aspects were flung into all the BROSR campaigns. She turned against Bel's plan to stab Ammonar (the sun) because really, do evil deities play nice together? Press X for "Doubt".

Here's what I tweeted this morning which got all the various brosr private chats buzzing with Patron and PC plans and freakouts.

"What means?!" the players all wanted to know. Or "lol dubs just trying to screw over our campaigns". Yes.

I was going to leave it at that since I believe all the information one needs about the #CurseOfLamalla is perfectly understandable in that thread which you can read here

But this cross campaign event has grown. Mr Wargaming asked me to do a blog post about the rules and concept that his loyal (and I'm sure intelligent and well groomed) fans could be linked to. Well here it is.

The bottom line is simple. If you are running a 1:1 time D&D campaign which the BROSR approves of or you can make an argument is BROSR adjacent, you can be part of this cross campaign event. The MCU has nothing on us.

All you have to do is let your players patrons know that Dubs' insane blood-rain story tweets apply to your campaign. Shoot them a link to the thread.

Then what? Well the curse lasts for 6 months in ALL the campaigns. Unless some good guy points can be earned. Each good guy point removes 1 month. Each bad guy point from antagonistic Patrons/PCs earns 1 bad guy point. So the time frame of the curse will slide up and down until 6 months passes or the points are +6.

What qualifies as a good guy point in your game is up to your DM. It should be focused on the fact that Lamalla has the sea cr
eatures running insane, attacking ships and shorelines, that blood rains from the sky and is ruining crops.

Perhaps your PCs delve a lost temple of Lamalla and find her aspect there and simply kill it. Perhaps they learn the leader of their major city is a Lamalla cultist and they assassinate him. Perhaps they go to a desert island with giant octopi scouring across it and do sea combat fleet battles.

It's whatever your campaign can dream up with these themes: blood rain, blood ocean/rivers, insane sea creatures, dark red mist clouds, crazy fish/crab goddess, STORMBRINGER.

Enjoy.

Until the curse runs it's course your campaign world must needs apply the following modifications which are found in this tweet thread. These are not ALL the possible problems or modifications. Your DM is free to add anything else to this event as he sees fit. It's my understanding one campaign already had a major Fish-Goddess storyline rolling so he just accellerated and added to it when he decided to rock the #CurseOfLamalla on his campaign.

How do you claim your points?

The BROSR needs receipts! Your points (for and against Lamalla) are applied when there is a session report posted about you tackling and succeeded at some related problem in your campaign. I'd prefer a blog then maybe you can find me on twi111ler and @ me the link. But Mr Wargaming and I have also considered a live tweet thread about the session where the DM signs off and says "yes that happened" (since PCs notoriously exaggerate their greatness in PC focused session reports).

The BROSR has already confirmed the following campaigns as part of this multiverse event: Dubzaron (ofc), BROvenloft, Trollopulous, Red Frontier and Living Urf.

You can join us and help take Lamalla down and decide the Fate of Stormbringer once and for all.

Update 10/28/22:

Lamalla is taking some hits and getting a bit more desperate for Chaotic and Evil Patrons and PCs on her side. She's offering powers undreamed of that score "bad guy" points for her, including a powerful Trident artifact the Trident of Lamalla, a host of sea creatures, and a castle beneath the waves.

Dubzaron Session 73: Queens Rest Mountain (running with a Patron's session idea)

This session was played on 09/22/22 using 2 days of travel, 1 day for adventure and 1 day of rest. PCs are able to take actions 09/26/22.

Participating PCs: Billy (Level 5 Explorer), Gront Coldsky (Level 3 Barbarian), Garland Briggs (Level 1 Explorer), Autumn Leaves (Level 1 Elven Spellsword), Xanthos (Level 6 Cleric)

Henchmen: Xanthos brought Circeus the level 1 Mage and Lysander the Level 1 Fighter and Strider the Level 1 Explorer who inexplicably has a Horn of Blasting

Session Report

Consider Queens Rest Mountain for your
next anniversary or event
The PCs, during downtime primarily, traveled out into the Sepia Uplands; the domain of Kyle O'Conner, a high level barbarian patron who was greatly involved in Operation Muscle Thunder. Kyle had been in talks with PCs for a while about them delving a dungeon near (in?) his domain and they finally took it on.

Kyle recently built a supply tower at the edge of his lands that is within a short distance of Queens Rest Mountain: a dormant (???) volcano with a Zaharan temple inside of it. For unclear reasons having something to do with prophesy or a curse, Kyle is unable to enter the temple or allow any of his clansmen to do so. Enter PCs!

The Forward Operating Base near Queens Rest Mountain was deemed FOB Queen and it's a safe place for PCs to rest or park after an adventure. So to those uncreative sorts that talk about "how can my pcs adventurer deep into the wilderness with 1:1 time? It's impossible!" I say to you that the players involved (including Patrons) will work within the limitations of the rules and come up with creative solutions.

FOB Queen was Kyle's solution to having a dungeon he wanted PCs to delve which was far out from civilization.

Kyle's quest was for PCs to map the ancient temple inside the volcano at like 250 gp reward per room I think. Their grander quest was to find a sleeping beauty somewhere in the place named Alicia who is somehow tied into Kyle's fate and even the Fate of Stormbringer cosmic event you can watch here on my friend's fantastic yooturb channel.

FOB Queen was quite well defended with many troops, perhaps with the assumption something bad might come out of the mountain for revenge? Who knows. Kyle's main explorer henchman Jeremiah Johnson led the PCs out to the volcano accompanied by about a company of troops. He then scaled the mountain with then and a platoon of archers, bringing them to the top where they could look down into the volcano. Geysers of hot mist filled the landscape as they ascended the mountain. At this point I was simply reading word for word the stuff Kyle wrote about what he imagined the place might look like. This was very much a situation where a Patron had written me something like a module to run and the players commented on how cool the descriptions were.

Stairs led down around the rim and stopped like a hundred feet down at a cyclopean balcony of large granite stone. Built into the oppose inside wall of the volcano from the stairs landing was the front of a fancy Zaharan (evil) temple thing. Under the balcony was bubbling lava which filled the whole cavern with an eerie orange glow.

This whole place had an awesome feel. Thanks Kyle!

Explorers tracked the stone balcony/bridges and were able to grok that about 20 lizard men and some very large lizard creatures went to the western entrance of the place. there was also a center entrance and another darkened cave on the eastern part of the temple wall which they didn't investigate.

Each major entrance they saw had 20' wide freestanding stairs going up to 20' wide double doors. The party decided to investigate the one where lizardman traffic was indicated. The free standing stairs at the eastern entrance had statues of Lammalla on either side with garnet eyes. Strider pulled one of the statues down with his grappling hook and Autumn Leaves noticed 2 more garnets in the rubble of the other statue.

From below the PCs could see the top of the stairs, at the open doorway leading into the temple, were fortified with wooden barricades with spikes. PCs started scheming how to destroy the barricades from afar when Gront agreed to try and sneak up and take a look into the room first. He saw 7 lizardmen guarding the barricade and doing a piss poor job of overlooking the volcanic cavern outside (they didn't hear the statue fall 20' away!) They also failed to notice Gront (he won surprise with barbarian skillz).

In the room beyond he saw a bunch of treasures like furs and such and about 12 more lizardmen. Gront backed up to the party at the bottom of the long stairs to report what he saw at the top. Billy decided to quaff an invisibility potion and sneak up to use his ooze launcher to strike pandemonium into the lizardmen guards. The ooze killed a couple lizardmen and madness ensued as the lizardmen came together to try to kill that ooze and the one Billy launched when he won initiative the following round when combat started. More lizardmen deaths! Off to a good start... so far

The fight got even crazier as Circeus cast Summon Beserkers and sent them screaming up the stairs to attack the front rank, they made a couple kills. Gront got in there early too (iirc). The lizardmen champions were having trouble trying to get the 2 oozes off of their more modestly buff brothers, losing their spears in the process. Eventually the big leader, an actual thracian one might see in the pit fights or legit gladiatorial games in Dubzaron, stepped forward with a magic polearm and killed the last ooze and all 4 beserkers in one cleave volley. The regular lizardmen were shooting crossbows down the stairs at any of the lesser armored looking adventurers. But weren't able to make anyone's spells fizzle due to losing init or simply missing when they won it. PCs, despite putting the big hurt on the lizardmen early with beserkers and ooze, started rolling pretty badly, not killing enough enemies fast enough to keep crossbow fire off them from the lizardmens' back ranks.

When Strider fell his horn of blasting went rolling out of his pouch onto the stairs and Autumn Leaves grabbed it up and blasted it forward, hitting all the lizardmen and killing a few with the deafening sound. The horn also destroyed the barricade completely which was good since the PCs were taking -2 to hit from fighting around it.The thracian big boss was quite angry indeed and picked up a crossbow from one of his dead compatriots just to aim it specifically at Autumn Leaves and killing the elf with a shot to the gut. Then killing Briggs with a cleave.

Lysander, for his crazy part, was holding the front line up the stairs after the blast and refusing to take even a single hit from 4 attacks a round. The lizardmen finally took enough casualties to make a 2nd morale check and the champions and the big geckos were fighting withdrawal. The thracian came down the stairs to try and attack Xanthos with his magic polearm but missed. Xanthos's 2 spiritual hammers moved down the stairs and finished the thracian off. At this point, thanks to Lysander declaring more lizardmen reinforcements coming from a door on the opposite side of the room the lizardmen were holding, the party began discussing retreat.

The party grabbed up the bodies of Autumn Leaves, Strider, and Circeus and went as fast as they could to the foot of the stairs that spiral out of the volcano. We were working out their relative speed for a dungeon chase when discussion with the PCs made me realize that Briggs would count as food and modify the chance the lizardmen wanted to chase the party at all. With the modifier the dice declared the lizardmen weren't angry enough to take chase. They were hungry and instead ate Merrick Garland Briggs as the party hoofed it up the stairs and from across the volcano bottom saw their friend flayed and chomped down.

At the top of the volcano Jeremiah Johnson said "what the hell happened down there?!" while the PCs triaged their compatriots. Circeus survived with a mortal wounds of messed up lungs. Strider and Autumn Leaves were not so lucky. Seeping bow wounds to the belly and chest weren't to be corrected in time to save them. They died as steam and jets of hot volcanic water went off nearby with Strider's last words being "keep exploring" and Autumn Leaves being "give my stuff to the lady mage". Buck and Kyle's folk escorted the party back to FOB Queen where the party is resting from their ordeal.

Afterword

It's not common for old school d&d, particular BX based systems like ACKS, to have session long combat. But that's exactly what happened this week and next!

Is this a problem? I'm not sure. I got better at it the following week for session 74 as you'll see. But the main thing is this large groups of beastmen and such, if not handled easily and quickly with magic, tend to just run on and on with their attacks. Then there's alot of questions about positioning and the DM has to make fair adjudication about where the front line is set up and how the big mob of monsters might react tactically.

I believe if the PCs would have won this combat they would have deemed this a fun session, even if all they did was kill the monsters and loot their lair; which we can assume is pretty stacked with treasure. But when a combat grinds on like this and the players don't win, the session will tend to cast a pall over the campaign for their enjoyment.

I imagine some sorts of players enjoy the tactical problem of these sorts of combats. They were perhaps spending their time contemplating a good way to flank or turn the front line in or something. So this sort of thing is not necessarily a problem or a drag on a real d&d campaign with player agency: players can simply say "nope" if the problem doesn't seem fun for them to tackle.

As you'll see in the next session report the problem got bigger and more involved as the lizards took prisoners and many patrons and legacy high level PCs got involved to try and help solve things.

Stay tuned!

Why ACKS is Not the Answer

The "Adventurer Conqueror King System" ( ACKS ) is not the answer to all your D&D dreams.       Sure, it is an incredib...
